In 2014, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) received 1,140 reported cases of Malaria caused by
P. falciparum in the United States. Since 1973, the trend has been increasing in the total number of cases of malaria reported in the United States. The majority of these cases were in people who had traveled to malaria-risk areas for the following reasons:
- Visiting friends or relatives
- Vacationing
- Missionary work
- Business
- Studying or teaching
- US military deployment
